Pies Men Like

bumper sticker overload

On Church Street yesterday I saw a van with several dozen bumper stickers, all expressing political or social views opposite my own. There were so many I just had to keep reading - and commit them to memory for re-telling. A sampling:

the NRA seal
"I'm NRA and I vote"
"Have you hugged your child today?"
"Sportsmen for Bush 2004"
various ads for sporting goods and hunting stores
"I heart Hooters"
"One nation under God"
various magnetic "ribbons" for supporting troops and general star-spangled patriotism
the chief: yesterday, today, forever
this is hard to explain, but imagine that there is a stencil of the trucker mudflap lady silhouette, and that stencil was placed over a US flag, bridging the stars and the stripes, and then someone traced her and cut her out and made her into a sticker

A few years ago I saw this little cookbook from some other dimension named Pies Men Like. Except it wasnt from another dimension. It was written by the folks at GM in the 1950s for the GM wives so they could make, well, pies their men liked. Delightfully retro in that gee-I'm-glad-the-50s -are-over sort of way. But also scary.

Be happy this is not our reality (at least, mostly it isn't, overtly it isn't). Rejoice in the people and experiences and things that make your pie yours. Pies I like! But I prefer cake.
